In recognition of Orphan Sunday, we’ll take a quick break from the Apostles’ Creed series in order to focus our attention on the church’s responsibility to the orphans and widows of the world.
Psalm 68:5-6 has been a source of hope for many who are concerned about the orphans. There are two statements in these two verses that give much reason for this hope. First, God says that He will be a “Father to the fatherless” and the “Protector of widows.” Then God declares that He is will set the “solitary” in a family. “Solitary” is sometimes translated as “lonely.”
Who are the “solitary” and “lonely” people that God is referring to in verse 6? (see Ps 113:9; 146:9). In what ways does God bring these solitary people into families?
In what ways is God able to comfort the lonely as their Father? (see Jn 14:18)
In what ways does God use the people of His church to comfort those who are afflicted? (2 Cor 1:3-4)
