This Sunday will be the final sermon in the God’s Road Sign sermon series. The sermon text for this Sunday is Exodus 31:12-18. The sign under consideration is the Sabbath.
Here are some questions to assist you in preparing for this sermon.
1. In verse 13, God identifies the Sabbath as a sign. As we’ve already seen with all the other signs, every sign has something that it points to. What does the sign of the Sabbath point to?
2. Why, according to verse 14, should the Israelites keep the Sabbath? What does it mean to “keep” the Sabbath?
3. What was the punishment for not keeping the Sabbath?
4. Verse 16 identifies “the people of Israel” as those who are obligated to observe “the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever.” Does this exclude Gentile Christians from having to observe the Sabbath? (Rom 9:6-8; 11:17-20; Eph 2:11-21; Rev 7:4; 21:12).
5. What does the writer of Hebrews mean when he says “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God…”? (Heb 4:9)
