Keys & Authority

This Lord’s Day will be special in the sense that we will be witnessing and celebrating the ordination of Kyle Mitchell as a deacon of RPC.  In connection with this event, the sermon will focus on the authority of church officers and their proper position amongst the body.

Our sermon text will be 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13a, which reads:”12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.”

In connection with this, we’ll be considering the origin and definition of the term “keys of the kingdom” (Mt 16:19; 18:18-20; John 20:22-23).  We’ll see how these “keys” have been given to the church leadership and how that authority has been passed on from generation to generation.

Here are some question to consider as you prepare for this coming Lord’s Day.

  1. What is the significance of laying on of hands? (Num 8:10; 27:18-23; Deut 34:9; Acts 6:6; 13:3; 1 Tim 4:14; 2 Tim 1:6).
  2. Where does the authority to lay on hands come from?
  3. How many official positions, or “offices,” has Christ ordained for His church?
